Wow -that’s awful. I’m honestly amazed by both parties. Good on the guy for not dragging it out and amazing parent not caring about the length of the sentence. I don’t know if I could be so calm about losing a child but this guys circumstance sucks. They said he couldn’t see the stop sign due to it being obstructed. That’s just sad. I feel bad for all parties.

This whole thing was such a shitshow from the word go. It sucks .

This guy killed people. He didn’t set out to. He didn’t want to. He may not have even done anything all that wrong. Here’s the intersection :

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/laid-humboldt-bus-crash-update-driver-info-1.4736826

The bus hit his truck as it was in the middle of the intersection. It’s entirely possible that he never saw the bus coming due to the trees. It’s possible the brakes on the truck failed.

We don’t know, because the RCMP never made the investigation results public. This article more clearly lays out the basis of ‘dangerous driving’:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/humboldt-crash-charges-arguments-opinion-1.4738013

So it’s entirely possible this guy did nothing wrong, but is pleading guilty to spare everyone the heartache of a trial. The only thing we know for certain is that the RCMP found enough evidence that the owner of the trucking company is facing another 8 criminal charges for violations of safety regulations.

http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/24952300/owner-truck-company-involved-humboldt-bus-crash-charged

These charges include failure to maintain driver logbooks, failure to monitor hours of service, failure to monitor driver compliance, failure to have or follow any written safety program, and multiple logs for a single day.

This. Whole. Thing. Sucks.

I’m pretty pleased with the responses from both parties here, but am still curious about the conditions that allegedly contributed to the crash. Some reports say that the stop sign itself was obscured, while others claim that it has more to do with trees blocking the sight line where one would have to look for approaching traffic.

Am I looking at the correct intersection? https://www.google.com/maps/@53.1035913,-104.0264098,669m/data=!3m1!1e3 Because despite the trees on the SW corner, it looks like westbound traffic approaching the intersection might have limited visibility seeing traffic coming from the south, and could only have a clear view once at the stop sign. ...which shouldn’t matter, because you don’t really need to watch for traffic as you approach. You still have to make a full stop anyway, regardless of whether there are any cars coming. Only once stopped does it become relevant to watch for traffic before proceeding.

EDIT: found this pic here . I still don’t understand the alleged tree “obstruction”. I’m all for more visibility, but this does not appear to be an inherent hazard. As long as the stop sign was still visible, the truck would have had to stop there, giving the driver ample opportunity to check for traffic.

I am always a bit suspicious when beloved authorities restrict data from public view.

Best thing I can say is good for the driver for not wanting to draw it out.

Normally I would be, but not this time. Because th ey’re in the process of throwing the book at the company . Do you know how often that happens? Basically never that I’m aware of. And t here’s no way they’re going to release the findings before the court case. It would give the defendant grounds to have it dismissed.

I have a very bad feeling that when the facts do come out in open court, we’ll find out that the driver had been on the road for 12 hours straight with no breaks, there was no pre-drive inspections ever, and the truck hadn’t been inspected since 2012. Meaning the poor guy was set up to have an accident from the word go.

Good points, I suspect you are right.

Now let’s see if  there is actual justice.

It depresses the hell out of me that I may be right. According to reports, the driver has been undergoing intense counseling from the very minute it happened.

I can’t begin to imagine. If I was in his position, I probably wouldn’t be around anymore.
